Geithner Expected To Outline Obama's Financial Rescue Plan Next Week

February 2, 2009 12:42 PM EST
Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will be giving a speech next week to outline the Obama administration's financial-rescue plans, according to reports from the Wall Street Journal.

Efforts to help homeowners in danger of foreclosure as well as additional steps to shore up the financial sector are expected to be included in the Obama plan.

The administration hasn't finalized its plans for the heart of the rescue, which could include a "bad bank" plan or a two-pronged approach that removes a portion of the bad assets and offers guarantees against future losses on some of the others.

Ahead of the speech, the administration is expected to announce tougher executive-compensation restrictions for companies getting the government aid. Firms that receive "exceptional" aid will be banned from receiving any severance payments and will see their bonus pools shrink by about 40% from 2007 levels.
