Dell (DELL) Looking To Enter The Smartphone Market

January 30, 2009 1:30 PM EST
Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) is looking to spike its revenue numbers as its personal-computer business continues to struggle amidst this difficult retail environment. Dell is looking to diversify its revenue and ignite sales by launching a smartphone, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The WSJ reported that Dell has had a group of engineers working on the new phones for more than a year. Thus far, the engineers have built prototypes built on Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android operating system and Microsoft Corp.'s (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows Mobile software.

Dell is targeting the smart-phone market, which includes features like Web browsing and email. This market already has strong entrenched competitors, including Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) popular iPhone, Research In Motion's (Nasdaq: RIMM) Blackberry and Palm's (Nasdaq: PALM) Treo and soon to launch the Palm Pre.

The Journal reported that one Dell model includes a touchscreen, but no physical keyboard. Another is a slider-style phone with a keypad and that slides from beneath the screen.

Dell could still abandon the effort the smart phone idea. A Dell spokesman said, "We haven't committed to anything."

In 2008, 157 million smartphones were sold worldwide, up 26.9% from 2007, according to IDC.
