Facebook Aims Newest Upgrade at Google (GOOG)

September 13, 2011 1:44 PM EDT
Aiming to take down a market leader is never an easy task... even if your company is Google (Nasdaq: GOOG).

Posted on the official Facebook blog Tuesday, the social networking giant is firing back at Google and it's social platform Google+. Facebook revealed new ways to organize friends, family, and acquaintances into specific groups.

Facebook's Blake Ross writes: "Want to see posts from your closest friends? Or perhaps you'd like to share a personal story with your family—without also telling all your co-workers. With improved Friend Lists, you can easily see updates from and share with different lists of friends."

Three specific improvements were made:
  • Smart lists - You'll see smart lists that create themselves and stay up-to-date based on profile info your friends have in common with you--like your work, school, family and city.

  • Close Friends and Acquaintances lists - You can see your best friends' photos and posts in one place, and see less from people you're not as close to.

  • Better suggestions - You can add the right friends to your lists without a lot of effort.
Users will also be able to add people -- like a boss or parent -- to restricted lists, allowing the sharing of content with only certain people.

Facebook's newest upgrade is aimed at competing with Google+, which emphasizes adding friends to "circles" to group them. Friends could be added to multiple circles as well. The circles allow users to share with just the people in the group, possibly set up a meeting, and collaborate on different levels (voice, webcam, etc.).

The new Facebook addition looks like it's limited to simply grouping, though Ross points out, "The people on the list you've shared with will be able to see each others' names. This gives them more context. For example, if I see that a post is shared with my five closest friends, I am much more likely to comment freely on it than I would be if I didn't know who else could see the post."
