Hey AT&T, Can You Hear Me Now?

December 7, 2009 4:28 PM EST

For every iPhone user in the U.S. that has wanted to show AT&T (NYSE: T) just how subpar its 3G wireless coverage is, now "there’s an app for that."

The carrier just released a new Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone app called "Mark the Spot" which will allow users to tell AT&T the exact location of where coverage failed to perform optimally. So instead of shouting obscenities, customers of AT&T are now able to show the company where they dropped a call, had lack of coverage or experienced poor voice quality.

The witty ad writers over at Verizon (NYSE: VZ) must be wide-eyed with potential punch lines that will come from this concession by its rival that it needs subscribers to point out where help is required.

It would seem logical that they for watch any Verizon commercial and see a vacant map to show them where to start.

While this could provide valuable information for AT&T about where service is particularly poor, it really may not be worth the public scrutiny that it is going to receive.

It has not been a good week for AT&T, after ranking fourth out of the four major wireless carriers in the U.S. in customer experience by a consumer report.

Shares of AT&T are up 1.27 percent, at $27.93, just before the market closing on Monday. Apple is down 2.19 percent to $189.02, while Verizon is up 1.62 percent to $33.24.
