Company introduces quarterly index to identify cloud and virtualization trends; names virtual desktops (VDI), hybrid clouds and licensing as top three trends in Q4 2011

KIRKLAND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- PaperShare, the world’s first social content network for business and technical professionals, today introduced the PaperShare Index for Cloud and Virtualization, a quarterly update on the latest trends and technologies shaping the cloud and virtualization industries. Each index will focus on the most popular topics and resources being shared and discussed among PaperShare’s rapidly growing community of cloud and virtualization technologists, vendors and leaders. With more than 31,000 items already shared on PaperShare, the company's index shows that virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), hybrid cloud computing and licensing for virtualization were the top three trends in Q4 2011. A summary and infographic for the report can be found here.

“Just as Twitter shows trending topics in the consumer space, the type of content being viewed on PaperShare provides deep insight into the trending topics in the cloud and virtualization industry,” said Steve Kaplan, vice president of virtualization at INX and author of one of the most popular documents available on PaperShare. “Being able to quickly glimpse at the latest industry trends based on the content being viewed by industry professionals is a valuable resource that helps my clients and me make better business and technical decisions.”

Top PaperShare Trend: Virtual Desktops (VDI) Adoption

PaperShare Trend: Hybrid Cloud Adoption Going Mainstream

Gartner revealed its top predictions for IT organizations in 2012 and forecasted that at year-end 2016, more than 50 percent of Global 1000 companies will have stored customer-sensitive data in the public cloud; a trend that speaks volumes on the direction of enterprise data and workflows.

The PaperShare community is acutely aware of the cost and efficiency benefits of moving data and operations to the cloud; over 300 different pieces of content about public and private cloud have been uploaded, viewed and shared over 3,500 times by users. Helpful materials from companies such as Amazon, Citrix, DynamicOps, Microsoft and VMware drive more than 100 comments and shares on the topic every day.

PaperShare Trend: Software Licensing is Evolving to Accommodate Cloud and Virtualization

A recent survey by IDC and Flexera Software found that application producers are evolving their licensing to accommodate new technologies like virtualization and the cloud. As enterprises continue to increase their use of these technologies and develop more complex IT environments, they need to understand how to optimize their software licensing in traditional and virtual environments to reduce cost and remain in license compliance. This is clearly reflected by the fact that content on PaperShare about licensing optimization for virtualization was extremely popular in the last few months, with more than 3,000 shares of licensing how-to documents, tools and calculators.

Some of the most helpful materials on licensing for virtualization include:

“With such an active and growing community of cloud and virtualization technologists and pundits on PaperShare, we are excited to issue a quarterly index to help surface the hottest trends and topics in cloud and virtualization among our user base,” said David Greschler, CEO and co-founder of PaperShare. “Our inaugural index shows that IT organizations are rapidly adopting new computing and software delivery models that require careful infrastructure and licensing decisions. Our goal is to provide a one-stop shop where industry professionals can connect with like-minded people as well as discover, discuss and share all of the useful documents, apps, and tools that are going to help them create the most efficient enterprise.”
