Simpson Thacher Elects Twelve New Partners
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP announces that it has elected 12 attorneys as members of the Firm effective January 1, 2012. The new partners are:
Ryan Bekkerus (Corporate – New York) – Mr. Bekkerus represents the Firm’s investment banking clients in connection with corporate finance transactions, with a focus on high yield offerings and initial public offerings. He also regularly represents leading private equity sponsors and their portfolio companies in connection with public and private offerings of debt and equity securities, including acquisition financings, corporate governance and other securities and corporate law matters. He received his J.D., cum laude, from Georgetown University Law Center in 2000 and his B.S.B. from the University of Minnesota in 1996. He joined Simpson Thacher in 2000.
Mark A. Brod (Corporate – London) – Mr. Brod concentrates his practice on capital markets transactions with a focus on offerings of high yield debt and equity securities, as well as general corporate matters. He earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 2001 and his A.B., magna cum laude, from Duke University, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He was also a Fulbright Scholar (Japan). Mr. Brod joined the Firm in 2001.
Andrew T. Calder (Corporate – Houston) – Mr. Calder specializes in mergers and acquisitions, corporate and securities laws and corporate governance, with a particular focus on the energy sector. He qualified as a solicitor in England & Wales in 2004 and received an LLB with honors from the University of Edinburgh in 2000. Mr. Calder joined the Firm in 2004.
Brian Chisling (Corporate – New York) – Mr. Chisling specializes in transactions involving energy and infrastructure companies, advising clients with respect to mergers and acquisitions, project financings and other transactions, as well as federal and state regulatory approvals and compliance. He received his J.D. with honors from the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law in 1994 and a B.S. and a B.A. from Indiana University in 1991. Mr. Chisling joined the firm in 1994.
Daniel Fertig (Corporate – Hong Kong) – Mr. Fertig focuses his practice on a wide range of equity and debt securities offerings representing both underwriters and issuers, as well as on a number of M&A transactions. He is fluent in Mandarin. Mr. Fertig received his J.D. from Columbia Law School in 2002 and earned an M.A. in East Asian studies from Columbia University in 1999 and a B.A. from the University of Virginia in 1994. He joined Simpson Thacher in 2002.
Nicholas S. Goldin (Litigation – New York) – Mr. Goldin represents companies and their boards, audit and special committees, and executives and other professionals in connection with a wide range of government inquiries, internal investigations, and related litigation. Before joining Simpson Thacher in 2010, he served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, where he was a member of the Securities and Commodities Fraud Task Force and the Computer Hacking and Intellectual Property Group. Mr. Goldin received his J.D. from Cornell Law School in 1999, where he was the Editor-in-Chief of the Cornell Law Review, and his B.A. from Cornell University in 1996, magna cum laude and with distinction in all subjects.
Jason A. Herman (Corporate – New York) – Mr. Herman focuses on the organization and operation of a wide range of private investment funds, including buyout funds, real estate funds, distressed, mezzanine and other debt funds, energy/infrastructure funds, hedge funds and hybrid funds. Mr. Herman received his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 2001. He received his B.A., with highest distinction, from the University of Michigan in 1997, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He joined the Firm in 2001.
Alexandra Kaplan (Corporate – New York) – Ms. Kaplan specializes in syndicated loan financings, with an emphasis on acquisition financing, and represents financial institutions, investment banks, financial sponsors and corporate borrowers in connection with leveraged and investment grade, asset-based and cash flow senior credit facilities, subordinated bridge loans, debtor-in-possession facilities and exit financings. Ms. Kaplan received her J.D. from Columbia Law School in 2002 and her B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1997. She joined Simpson Thacher in 2002.
Juan F. Mendez (Corporate – New York) – Mr. Mendez’s practice primarily focuses on Latin America and the Caribbean. He has extensive experience in cross-border transactions throughout the region, including representation of leading companies and investment banks in a broad range of capital markets financings, restructurings and other complex corporate matters. He is fluent in Spanish. Mr. Mendez received his J.D. from Columbia University School of Law, a LL.M. in International Legal Studies from New York University and his B.A. from University of Virginia. He joined Simpson Thacher in 1999.
Antti Pesonen (Corporate – London) – Mr. Pesonen specializes in domestic and cross-border syndicated credit, acquisition finance and other leveraged finance transactions, acting on behalf of both borrowers and banks throughout Europe. He was admitted as an English solicitor in 2001 and joined Simpson Thacher in 2003. Mr. Pesonen received his Legal Practice Certificate from the College of Law in London in 1999 and received his undergraduate B.A. from the University of London (School of Oriental and African Studies) in 1997.
Deborah L. Stein (Litigation – Los Angeles) – Ms. Stein represents clients in a broad range of high-stakes litigation in federal and state courts across the country. Her areas of concentration include insurance coverage, securities, False Claims Act and consumer class action litigation. Ms. Stein obtained her J.D., cum laude, from the New York University School of Law in 1999, where she served as a Notes Editor on the New York University Law Review, and her B.A. from Yale University in 1995. She joined the Firm in 2001 following a clerkship with the Honorable Peter C. Dorsey in the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut.
Daniel N. Webb (Corporate – Palo Alto) – Mr. Webb specializes in capital markets transactions and mergers and acquisitions, as well as advising public companies on corporate law, governance and securities law matters. He regularly works with participants in the technology industry. He received his J.D. from Harvard Law School, cum laude, in 2001, his M.A. from UCLA in 1998 and his A.B. from Harvard University, magna cum laude, in 1996. Mr. Webb joined Simpson Thacher in 2005.
